Morgan Maassen – Interview/Gallery

There’s an interview with Morgan Maassen on surfcareers.com, it’s pretty brief but there’s a few interesting questions about how he got started in the career, he echoes Eugene Tan’s advice to Shoot every day when asked what tips he has for anyone learning surf photography:

Do you have any advice for people wanting to make a career out of surf photography?

I’d recommend shooting photos everyday, looking for inspiration outside of the subjects you plan to shoot, and be prepared to throw all your weight into marketing and networking!

The networking side of things I think comes later, I reckon this advice is aimed at people who are already photographers who want to turn it into a profession, when you’re just starting out it might be better to stick to photography based sites and forums to try to get some critique on your work, then hit social media once you’ve got a portfolio of images to spread around.

In an attempt to shoot every day, or at least as many days as possible, I’ve been experimenting with a new flash option in the water, it’s kind of working but I need to refine it a bit so there will be a post about it in the future at some point but it might take a while, flash photography is the only way I’m going to get to shoot each day whilst working throughout Christmas anyway, so that’s a good motivator to get it done.

Interestingly the two favourite photo’s of his that he mentions in the interview don’t appear in the gallery on the site, they do however show up on the gallery on the weather channel website here:

This is not one of his favourites, just the one I like the best, be sure to check out the link above to see his shots of the whales and the water hole, very inspiring.
