Aquatech: New Housings and More?

Aquatech are well respected in the housing manufacturer world, and command a pretty high price too, there’s a few new housings coming out and even a new port or two if the Instagram posts are anything to go by.

This new Elite model housing is going to be available for the Canon 5d mark 2 and 3 and the Nikon D800 & D600, the price is going to be $1895 plus local taxes, that will be for the housing itself so ports and pistol grips etc. will be extra, but many people will already have the ports and accessories for their lenses.

You’ll notice the new zoom knob (as featured on the Canon 1Dx and 1DC housings) on the front of the housing so you don’t need a lens port with a knob on it any more.

Also in this photo below there’s a funny looking wide flat port which should be ideal for over/under shots which usually suffer from focus issues due to the need for a dome port, apparently it’s for the new Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 II lens but can be used with other short primes.

You can also see the Peli Case used o transport the housing, ports, body and lenses, I’ve recently bought one to help transport my gear safely, once I get around to properly kitting it out with my foam insert I’ll put up a full post on it.

And finally, one that isn’t strictly surf photography, but it is the first non ghetto looking housing for the Red video camera system:

I got to see one of these beasts in person a few weeks ago and it’s a proper lump of kit with all the extras bolted on, it must be a pain to manoeuvre it around a line up but plenty of people do already in basic looking aluminium housings so this is probably going to be a winner for anyone doing professional video production.

All looks good for Aquatech and the more they diversify the more likely they are to keep making decent housings, with every new generation it gives you more opportunities to pick up second hand equipment so keep your eye’s peeled and remember that the pro kit of the last few years is still good stuff and can often be adapted for use with more budget friendly camera bodies.
