The original Canon 7D was a very popular camera body for surf photographers, so the 7D mark II should prove to be another hit for action and sports shooters like us, the release date is October 30th and the first reviews are coming in, so if you’re one of the people who have been waiting for this camera take a look at the links below for more information.
I’ve only recently upgraded my DSLR to a 70D, so I’m not going to be getting a 7D Mark II any time soon, but I’m keeping up a bit with the reviews and I know some of the readers of this site will be very interested to find out more, so here’s a run down of the latest information:
- Gizmodo have done a review, it’s pretty standard stuff, there’s some accusations of bias to mirrorless style camera bodies in the comments but the author seems pretty on the ball and is happy to recommend it to people who want the best features for sports photography.
- DP Reviews first impressions review doesn’t reveal anything surprising but is encouraging for people looking for an upgrade
- DP review also get a professional opinion – a newspaper staff photographer who shoots sports gives her perspective and it’s fairly positive, the usual points are raised and there’s no red flags for surf photographers.
- Also on Dp Review – there’s a gallery of real world examples, but nothing too sporty, so it’s not too useful
- Tech radar have a hands on post which is very similar to all the opther’s you’ve read, it doesn’t look like they got to test it ast length, just to have a quick play with it, but all fairly positive stuff.
You can pre-order the 7D Mark II on Amazon for $1800, if you’ve got a bunch of Canon lenses and you want the best cropped sensor camera body for sports then it sounds like it’s your best option.
I’d expect the major housing manufacturers to come up with a water housing pretty quickly, or at least a new back plate for an existing housing.
If you’re not invested in Canon glass you might prefer to keep your fingers crossed for the rumoured Sony a7000…
