Michael Kew’s blog peathead is a really interesting read including some awesome snippets of surf photography history that you’re sure to enjoy if you’re learning surf photography.
This post in particular is worth a read: Room With A View
It describes pioneering in the barrel photographer Harold Ward, who partnered with one of the legends of early surf imagery George Greenough to get the first in the barrel looking out shots using a remote shutter release mounted on George’s back.
a desire to shoot stills while tuberiding grew within me. George showed me how to build a water housing for my camera, fitted with a fisheye lens, and I spent many a day trying to get a reasonable shot from inside the tube, without much success
All that was in 1968, now you can grab a GoPro and head to the nearest reef or shorey and capture your own version, I’m personally glad I’m getting to grips with this hobby now rather than back then and can’t wait for the next generation of cameras that will make the GoPro look retro.
