Infra Red Surf Photography: Life On Mars

I was looking around for a cheap Sony NEX on Ebay, and I spotted a couple that had been converted to shoot in Infrared, I’ve seen a few photo’s from Infrared cameras before and always thought it just looked like a wacky filter, a gimmick.

The Life on Mars: The Oahu Infrared Project article on Transworld Surf’s website features photos by Aaron Checkwood and is the first time I’ve seen Infrared in a surfing context, I really like the water shots with the palm trees, but the landscape shots leave me with the same feeling, why not just shoot a regular photo?

What I like most about the article is the thought that went into getting the shots that I like the most, the ones with the striking contrast between the relatively normal looking blues of the water and the shocking pink of the “greenery” on shore.

I appreciate the effort Aaron Checkwood went to to get the shots he wanted, but I don’t think I’ll be getting an Infrared converted camera any time soon.
