Jeff Hubbard by Tom Brune on Le Boogie – Long Lens Water Photography

I spotted this shot on Le Boogie magazine’s fast-tracked daily image feature and the close up water shot style intrigued me.

Tom Brune’s photo of Jeff Hubbard on the Le Boogie website

The photographer is Tom Brune, and he shot it using a Canon 50D and a Canon 70-200mm F4 USM lens, a very similar set-up to the one I use, unfortunately I don’t have a port for my proper housing which will work with this lens, but I see a lot of really nice water photo’s shot using it so it might be a future purchase if I can find one at a decent price.

Instead I use the Aquapac DSLR case with my 60D and 70-200 lens, it fits in perfectly and allows me to use any of the controls of my camera, of course it probably wouldn’t stand up to many sessions at Pipe, and I’m sure Tom used a full splash housing with dedicated port for this shot, but I am quite happy with the results my set-up yields.

Ross Duerden, Bantham, ISO 640, 113mm, f4, 1/1000

This photo of Ross Duerden was taken at Bantham, which has quite a shifty peak on most days and the zoom allowed me to sit quite far inside and still get close in, just like Toms shot at Pipeline, if you haven’t tried out this type of lens in the water I’d recommend it, it’s a bit unwieldy but the flexibility it offers is really valuable for shooting a less predictable wave.

If you want to see some more images shot with this lens check out Tom’s Tumblr, or Zak Noyle’s Instagram.
