Pastels With The Panasonic

I’m between DSLR’s at the moment, and there was a small swell with uncharacteristically nice weather this morning at a local beach, so I chucked my backup Panasonic GF1 and cheap kit lens in my bag in case there was a photo’ opportunity before the surf.

There’s been a nice misty fog hanging around for the last few days without any higher cloud cover to get in the way, it makes for really nice pastel shades at dawn and dusk, making a nice backdrop for a small clean swell.

I’ve taken photo’s from the same spot with my Canon 60D and 70-200mm before and really liked them, so I was a bit sceptical about the smaller sensor, lower resolution and shorter focal length available, not to mention the lack of any real rapid burst ability on the GF1.

As it turns out I was quite impressed with the results from the 12 MP Panasonic, especially with the very cheap 14-42mm kit lens, the shots are plenty good enough for use on the ‘net, and the raw files seem just as easily tweaked in Lightroom as my Canon files.

So next time you don’t have a big camera handy, or if you don’t have one at all, take what you’ve got to the beach and see what surf shots you can come up with.
