This is the latest, and best, Photolyfe feature from Stabmag, this time on Trent Mitchell.

Have a look for some inspiration.
I remember a series of striking images which feature in his book above/below that I’ve seen on line and in White Horses magazine which feature cross swell, waves coming in at right angles, it reminded me of a local spot that I really want to photograph next time it’s doing this, it’s a pretty rare occurrence and I doubt it will happen at my spot until winter in the UK, but I’ll be ready to capture it when it does.
It also reminded me of a photo I saw online of cross waves at île de Ré on the West coast of France, happily I’m going to be in the region in a couple of weeks, and although it sounds like a bit of a mission to get to the Northern tip of île de Ré, if the conditions are right I’ll make sure I make my way up there.
The other thing that piques my surf photography nerd interest is the Hassleblad XPan camera with 45mm lens, in a (Dave Kelly made) water housing, I’d never heard of this camera before seeing the image of it in answer to the question: “What’s your favourite weapon” – it takes panoramic images on 35mm film, and I doubt there are many water housings out there for this relatively rare and expensive camera.
The lesson for people learning surf photography is: try and find something unique about the everyday waves you photograph and they will stick in peoples minds.
