Water Surf Photography Gear Introduction

Raw Transcript

I love taking surf photos in the water that’s one of my favorite types of surf photography and if you haven’t done that before or even if you’re starting out in that process now this course is going to be really valuable to you because it’s going to go through the gear that you need to get the type of shot that you want whether you’re just starting out with a GoPro or maybe you’ve already got a DSLR or mirrorless camera that you want to then get into the water this is going to run through the types of housings you could go for and then we’re going to cover other essentials that you need things like swim fins and pistol grips and leashes for your housing stuff like that so this should give you all the information you need to know to get the gear to get in the water and get the shots you want I want to quickly mention safety at this stage I’m going to mention it again in future videos but I just want to make sure that if you are going to be taking on water photography for the first time you need to be 100% comfortable in the water in waves ideally with surfers coming towards you as well and it’s not something that you can typically get overnight that type of confidence so it takes experience and practice and if you haven’t been in heavy waves before or any type of waves before I would definitely recommend getting into the water trying to find a beach where they have a lifeguard on duty and just experience being in the waves do some body surfing swim through the waves put your swim fins on the same kit you’re going to be wearing when you’re taking photos but leave your camera on the beach and just experience what it’s like to be in the waves because even quite experienced surfers sometimes don’t have that about experience of being in the impact zone where the waves are breaking so it’s something that you really want to be comfortable with because needless to say if you’re worried about getting out of people’s way or just making it under waves or making it back to the beach then you’re not gonna be able to take a good photo so first things first spend a lot of time as much time as you can getting used to the waves becoming familiar with it it’s gonna be something that if you are a surfer already comes a lot more naturally or at least you’ve had more experience doing that already but like I say even if you’re a surfer I would take the time to wave through things if you’re not used to those especially and just swim into the surf zone where you want to be taking photos but leave your camera on the beach once you get comfortable and you’ve got the experience when your belt and the instincts to know what’s roughly what’s going to happen in the water at certain times then bring your camera in and honestly you’ll find it much more a much more fulfilling experience you’re going to be able to actually get the photos you want a lot more often if you’re comfortable in that situation
